Tom Uttech: One With Nature

One of the most widely admired landscape painters working in America today, Tom Uttech weaves a mystical world of imagined and real elements that are loosely based on his beloved North Woods. One With Nature presents a selection of paintings and more than thirty photographs by Uttech. A highlight of the exhibition is his recent, large-scale masterwork Nin Gassinsibingwe (I Wipe My Tears).
Inspired by his countless pilgrimages deep into the remote wilderness of Minnesota, southern Canada, and his native Wisconsin, Uttech’s paintings have been described as Magic Realism, depicting fantastical realms rooted in the artist’s life-long connection with nature. Separate yet parallel to his paintings, Uttech’s early photographic pursuits reveal how the medium informed his ways of absorbing and conveying the North Woods.
The photographs and paintings come from the collection of the Museum of Wisconsin Art in West Bend, the leading institution dedicated to preserving and presenting the work of the state’s artists. Tom Uttech: One With Nature is organized in collaboration with the Museum of Wisconsin Art.
The exhibition is on view in the Main Gallery and Salon Gallery.
