HYBYCOZO Sculptures in Daylight

August 5, 2022 to October 30, 2022

As part of the special nighttime exhibition The Nature of Light: An Exploration After Dark, the Paine is presenting more than fifty illuminated sculptures by HYBYCOZO throughout the mansion and gardens. While especially striking at night, the metallic sculptures are also stunning to view in daylight. Outdoors, more than three dozen sculptures are nestled among three acres of gardens. Indoors, lighting installations fill seven rooms on the first floor of the mansion, including a major display in the darkened main art gallery.

HYBYCOZO, the Hyperspace Bypass Construction Zone, is an installation arts and sculpture studio focused on creating large-scale artworks that investigate geometric forms through light, shadow, and perception. Their work consists of larger than life sculptures created with the use of digital fabrication tools such as laser cutters and 3D printers and draw on inspirations from mathematics, science, and natural phenomena.

Much of their artwork acknowledges diverse cultural influences in pattern making and design and celebrates the inherent beauty of geometric form and pattern. Their work has been exhibited around the world from the Smithsonian in Washington D.C. to Burning Man in California, and from Dubai to Singapore. Recent permanent works by HYBYCOZO have been installed at the Embassy of the United States in Turkey and the California Health and Human Services building in Sacramento.

The Paine offers daylight viewing during regular visiting hours, and admission includes viewing the sculptures located both inside the mansion and outdoors in the gardens. During daytime hours, the Paine also offers crafts and activities for children in the Studio, located on the lower level of the mansion. Reservations are recommended (see below). Offered during daytime hours on Saturday, September 24, and Saturday, October 22, all-ages artmaking activities related to The Nature of Light are available outdoors.
