About the Exhibition

Light has the power to transform, transport, and transfix in remarkable and unexpected ways. To capture this wonder, this immersive nighttime exhibition was created exclusively for the Paine through a collaboration between two acclaimed studios renowned for crafting remarkable and distinctive experiences.

HYBYCOZO is a collaborative installation art collective made up of Serge Beaulieu and Yelena Filipchuk. Their work consists of larger than life sculptures that celebrate the inherent beauty of geometric form and pattern, and compose them in ways that harmonize the experience of sculpture, light, and shadow. Much of their work draws on inspirations from mathematics, science, patterns in nature, and acknowledges diverse cultural influences in pattern making and design. HYBYCOZO is a vessel to explore the frontiers of art, science, and human experience, and to ignite the spark of wonder that resides within us all. Their hope is to cultivate a sense of shared experience and understanding, strengthening the social fabric of communities. They have permanent public sculptures around the world from Dubai to Istanbul, Las Vegas, and the San Francisco Bay Area.

Lightswitch is an experiential lighting and visual design practice with studios throughout the world. For more than 30 years, Lightswitch has created a wide spectrum of projects, ranging from concerts for artists including Hans Zimmer, Michael Bublé and Halsey, to theme park experiences for The Walt Disney Company and Universal Studios, to distinctive projects including the relight of the Great Pyramids of Giza and the U505 at the Griffen Museum of Science and Industry in Chicago. Lightswitch created ‘Illumination–Tree Lights for the Morton Arboretum’ in Chicago and ‘Enlightened’ at Meijer Gardens in Grand Rapids.

For nearly a decade, HYBYCOZO and Lightswitch have partnered on installations within other projects, but The Nature of Light is an exclusive collaboration on a major, large-scale exhibition. With a complete, defined collection of carefully curated experiences throughout the estate and the grounds, The Nature of Light at the Paine showcases the synergy of HYBYCOZO and Lightswitch’s combined creativity in an exhibition which engages, delights and enthralls guests of all ages.
