Alphonse Mucha: Master of Art Nouveau

February 8 – August 30, 2020

Alphonse Mucha: Master of Art Nouveau highlights 75 artworks by the celebrated Czech master, whose expressive and seductive imagery helped shape the aesthetics of the French Art Nouveau movement at the turn of the 20th century. The gorgeous Art Nouveau designs of Alphonse Mucha (1860-1939) featured in this acclaimed exhibition are drawn from one of the finest private collections of the artist’s work.

Taking inspiration from the natural world, Art Nouveau influenced art, architecture, and design, especially in graphic work and illustration, with its sinuous lines and whiplash curves. Mucha’s designs for posters, books, advertising labels, and more circulated widely throughout Europe and America. His work became synonymous with the international Art Nouveau style, popularly called ‘Le Style Mucha’ in Paris. Through rare, vintage lithographs, original drawings, books, and advertising ephemera, the exhibition examines the broad range of Mucha’s work, which emphasized creating a new art fit for a new century.
