Family Discovery Gallery

.

The Family Discovery Gallery is an interactive center for children and their families. With over a dozen "hands on" exhibits, the Family Discovery Gallery introduces and explores the Paine's exceptional combination of architecture, gardens and art. The Paine's gallery has three learning areas called Discover the House, Discover Gardens, and Discover Art, as well as a central activity area for changing projects and workshops that encourage children to look, touch, experiment and create in new and fun ways.

Family Discovery Gallery Saturday Programs

The Paine is also pleased to announce the upcoming class schedule for educational programs in the Family Discovery Gallery which offer children the opportunity to learn from real artists, art teachers and horticultural experts! Saturday activities focus on art and gardens, and are offered in the Family Discovery Gallery on a drop-in basis from 11:00 am to 4:00 pm. The programs are geared for children ages 5-12. Children must be accompanied by an adult. No pre-registration is required. Programs are free with paid admission to the Paine (free for Paine Members and Big Brothers Big Sisters participants).

Night Time Showers with Juli Clark
May 10, 2008

Did you ever lie in bed at night and hear raindrops tapping on your window or pounding on the roof?  That can be a soothing sound or sometimes a little scary.  The raindrops that fall on your drawing today will be of another kind - fun!  That’s because with Juli Clark’s help you will not only be the one who decides if there is a light rain or a storm, you’ll be able to see them falling in the dark!

Festival of Spring Fun! with Gail Schultz
May 17, 2008

Join artist and gardening enthusiast Gail Schultz outside today among the plants and colorful artwork at the Festival of Spring.  There, she has a simple fun project for you that starts with masking tape.  After you apply a few pieces of tape on a clay pot, she will show you how to sponge paint it.  Once it is dry, follow her instructions and plant the seeds she gives you for a lovely blooming planter.

Origami Frogs with Teresa Moucha
May 24, 2008

A wetland or marsh is an amazing place full of plant, animal and amphibian life.  Since we don’t have many such places in Oshkosh, we are doing a bit of pretending today in the Family Discovery Gallery.  Teresa Moucha will show you how to fold and crease some special paper to make your own colorful origami frog.  Listen to the chorus of sounds frogs make and you can add your own vocalization.

Blowing in the Wind with Janelle Brooks
May 31, 2008

You have probably seen colorful windsocks decorating porches and flagpoles in your community.  How about a “glove” instead of a “sock”? Janelle Brooks has the supplies ready for a garden wind glove to make and hang near your front door or from a tree branch in your yard.  Mother Nature will supply the wind power!

Making Your Sketchbook with Megan Hottman
June 7, 2008

Hurray!  School is over and summer begins!  Now you will have lots of time to do all sorts of fun things.  Start today with Megan Hottman who will show you the steps to making your own sketchbook.  Add your special design to the cover and you’ll be ready to spend some lazy summer days drawing your favorite subjects from silly doodlings to serious studies.

Drawing in the Gardens with Megan Hottman
June 14, 2008

The Paine’s gardens have been the inspiration for many artists - let it be yours today!  If you have your own sketchbook, bring it along or use our drawing paper and special boards.  Megan Hottman will lead you to a few particularly charming areas in the gardens that will make beautiful scenes for your sketches.  Use black drawing pencils or colored pencils to add the rainbow of colors you see and learn how to use shading to add depth to your artwork.
