The Family Discovery Gallery is an interactive center for children and their families. With over a dozen "hands on" exhibits, the Family Discovery Gallery introduces and explores the Paine's exceptional combination of architecture, gardens and art. The Paine's gallery has three learning areas called Discover the House, Discover Gardens, and Discover Art, as well as a central activity area for changing projects and workshops that encourage children to look, touch, experiment and create in new and fun ways.

The activities in the Family Discovery Gallery are free with admission to the Paine (free for members and Big Brothers Big Sisters participants).

Family Programs

A new schedule of fun and creative Family Programs is offered every Saturday in the Family Discovery Gallery. In coordination with local artists, community members, teachers and University of Wisconsin Oshkosh students, the Paine’s Family Programs encourage children to learn about art, architecture and horticulture in new ways.

Family Programs are offered on Saturdays in the Family Discovery Gallery on a drop-in basis from 11:00 am to 4:00 pm. The programs are geared for children ages 5-12. Children must be accompanied by an adult. No pre-registration is required. Programs are free with admission to the Paine (free for Paine Members and Big Brothers Big Sisters participants).

Hide and Seek with Gail Schultz
August 28, 2010

Sometimes Norman Rockwell wanted to add a touch of whimsy to his paintings. For April Fool’s Day in 1948, he created a painting which is currently on view in the Paine’s Main Gallery with nearly sixty “errors” for viewers to find. Some “mistakes” like a dog’s head on a cat’s body are obvious while others are trickier to find. Artist Gail Schultz will help you hide some surprises in your drawing. Then see just how long it takes someone to seek and find them!

Layers of Autumn with Katie Scott
September 4, 2010

The warm summer days are slowly coming to an end and soon cooler temperatures will arrive. Katie Scott’s project uses the warm colors of the fall season, reds, oranges, and yellows, along with some special touches of gleaming gold and silver. Layering your choices of a variety of papers and adding shapes creates an interesting composition certain to have you ready to welcome the Wisconsin autumn weather.

Is it Simple, Origami? with Lindsay Hermsen
September 11, 2010

Fold and press. Open and press. Oops a wrong crease there—even simple origami can seem a bit difficult! Sometimes a picture can be hard to follow. Be frustrated no longer! Visit the Family Discovery Gallery and with the assistance of Lindsay Hermsen, you will learn just how to turn an ordinary piece of paper into an origami work of art.

Window Art with Jessica Kelly-Paul
September 18, 2010

Whether you are standing inside looking out or outside looking in, the artwork you create today will look great! Jessica Kelly-Paul has a special window cling material and bold colored permanent markers to make your designs and drawings. When you are finished, you can take them home, peel off the backing and press them on your window to let the sun shine through.

All-American Beading Project with Morgan Achterberg
September 25, 2010

Perhaps no one has portrayed American life scenes better than Norman Rockwell, and what is more American than the colors red, white and blue? Those will be your choices today as you slide beads along cording or plastic lanyard. Morgan Achterberg will help you put together a patriotic colored bracelet or necklace perfect for you or someone special to show your American pride!

Nature Walk with Gwen Frederiksen
October 2, 2010

All the garden paths that surround the Paine mansion are filled with interesting twists and turns that feature a variety of trees, shrubs and flowers. Gwen Fredericksen enjoys a peaceful walk and hopes you will join her today in the gardens. She has a particular path to follow that leads to an almost secret spot, just for children. Along the way look for some of nature’s treasures, tiny blooms or interesting leaves, perhaps a spider spinning a web or the song of a Cardinal. Spend time in the Nature Field Station and enjoy its fun activities.    Programs begin at 11:30 am, 12:30 pm, 1:30 pm & 2:30 pm.

Nature Weavings with Sue Johnson
October 9, 2010

The large box artist Sue Johnson is bringing to the Family Discovery Gallery today contains just the beginnings of a weaving project. You will need to do some preparation too by gathering some of nature’s own items for weaving like tall grasses and long thin twigs, colorful leaves and other dried plant material. Even if you don’t have these supplies in your backyard, the Paine gardens will supply what you need. Then work together with Sue to create a unique wall hanging that conveys the richness of Wisconsin in autumn.

Modeling Clay Pictures with Ruth Rex
October 16, 2010

Playing with clay is fun for anyone! Even grown-ups like artist Ruth Rex want to share in the fun! So she has a special art project that begins with colorful clay that you pull and shape and push and twist and end with a picture. Does this sound a little odd? How do you work with a 3-D material and make a picture? Visit the Family Discovery Gallery today and learn how to turn this pliable material into a relief sculpture.

Stained Glass Leaves with Jessica Kelly-Paul
October 23, 2010

Crayons come in hundreds of colors, but can you choose just three favorites? If you can, then Jessica Kelly-Paul can help you start this project. You will also need to choose a leaf shape to trace, like an oak, maple or gingko. With paper and a warm iron (and help from an adult) you will put together something to decorate your window for fall that is as pretty as stained glass.

Bag Puppets with Morgan Achterberg
October 30, 2010

Turning an ordinary paper bag into a hand puppet may be something you have done before.  But Morgan Achterberg wants these puppets to be extra-ordinary! With Halloween just around the corner, she hopes you won’t be too scared to dig into her deep box of strange and unusual supplies and pull out the makings of a monster!

Pull A Print with Molly Roell
November 6, 2010

Are you a fast worker? Good. Do you know how to work carefully and slowly? Good.  Does this sound confusing? It won’t be if you follow easy directions from Molly Roell. First you will paint fast. Then you will carefully press paper. Then you will pull slowly. And, voila, a print with beautiful colors and textures created by you!
