Chihuly Venetians
From the George R. Stroemple Collection
May 11 – October 13, 2013
Chihuly Venetians is a stunning presentation of 47 vessels, 12 drawings, and 1 “chandelier” in the Venetian style from the George R. Stroemple Collection. Active since the 1960s, Dale Chihuly is widely regarded as the most innovative glass artist working today. Featured in this exhibition are works from Chihuly’s Venetians series, which are intricately formed and brilliantly colored glassworks inspired by Art Deco Venetian glass from the 1920s and 1930s. Included in the exhibition is a magnificent 5-part chandelier composed of more than 1500 pieces of glass. A number of Chihuly’s drawings will also be on view, which serve as independent works of art and “blueprints” bring his designs to life. More Info

Jessica Calderwood: Recent Work
February 28 – April 7, 2013
Jessica Calderwood is an image-maker and sculptor who works primarily with the media of metal and enamel. She uses a combination of traditional and industrial metalworking processes to make statements about contemporary life. Her sculptures, wall pieces, and collages are imbued with personal stories and vibrant color. As the artist states:
“These works combine flower/botanical forms with fragments of the human body in order to address the narrative of human life cycles.... I created these works to be intentionally humorous and ironic. These human/plant hybrids are large, voluptuous, headless, and armless. They are intended to portray a spectrum of concepts relating to gender and identity. These anthropomorphic beings are at once, powerful and powerless, beautiful and absurd, inflated and amputated.”
The artist currently works as an Assistant Professor of Art at the University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh. For more information, please visit www.jessicacalderwood.com.

Counterpoint:
Rodger Bechtold & Richard
Taylor
February 10–May 20, 2012
This dynamic exhibition pairs the work of two distinguished contemporary artists with Wisconsin ties. Bright, luminous landscapes are the trademark of midwestern painter Rodger Bechtold. Bechtold often paints in Door County, finding inspiration in its pristine beauty, pure light, and weathered barns. On the other hand, Milwaukee-based Richard Taylor creates colorful painted metal sculptures, ranging from whimsical freestanding works to complex wall installations inspired by music, poetry, and memories. While the two artists share a natural affinity in their expressive use of color and their midwest roots, the exhibition also explores the intriguing differences between their works.

A highlight of the exhibition is the Paine’s rare and ravishing portrait of Chase’s second daughter, Koto Robertine, depicted as an elegant, mature woman in her twenties. William Merritt Chase: Family Portraits sheds new light on the touching and powerful inspiration the artist found within his own family and reaffirms Chase’s position as one of America’s foremost portraitists. Norman Rockwell: American Imagist
June 5 – October 3, 2010
“I paint life as I would like it to be,” said the beloved American illustrator Norman Rockwell. As one of the most celebrated illustrators and storytellers of the 20th century, Rockwell captured the warm and optimistic American spirit through depictions of everyday life that came to define this country both at home and abroad. His greatest impact was achieved through the hundreds of cover illustrations he created for the Saturday Evening Post from 1916 to 1963. This monumental exhibition features the complete collection of 323 vintage Saturday Evening Post covers and offers visitors the rare opportunity to view more than twenty original oil paintings and studies by Rockwell’s hand. Norman Rockwell: American Imagist is organized by American Illustrators Gallery in New York City and the National Museum of American Illustration in Newport, Rhode Island. More Info
Buddy “L” Trucks: All-American Toys from Rockwell’s Time
June 5 – October 3, 2010
In conjunction with Norman Rockwell: American Imagist, the Paine is pleased to present an exhibition of vintage, pressed-steel toys in the upstairs Gothic Gallery. One of the most successful lines of toy vehicles ever produced, Buddy “L” toys were made by the Moline Pressed Steel Company of Illinois beginning in 1921. The toys quickly gained popularity for their large size, durability, authentic details, and working features, such as real hydraulics and headlights. Today Buddy “L” toys are highly collectible with the most sought-after examples being the heavy-gauge, pre-World War II models featured in this exhibition.

A Colorful Collection
February 6 – May 9, 2010
This exhibition brings together an intriguing array of vibrant paintings and decorative objects from the Paine’s permanent collection, as well as from regional private collections. The works of art were selected not only for their interesting color palettes, but also for the way they relate to and complement one another. Collection favorites are paired with new acquisitions, rarely seen pieces, and remarkable loans, including a dazzling trio of Tiffany lamps. While some works feature bold, expressive colors, others evoke a more contemplative mood through the use of subtle, delicate tones.
